About

Long Island offers excellent and diverse saltwater and freshwater fishing opportunities for the kayak enthusiast.

Seasonally, Long Island offers inshore saltwater opportunities for trophy fish of several species including striped bass, tautog, weakfish, summer flounder, bluefish, black sea bass and false albacore. A kayak angler can target these species in a variety of scenic environments including the sheltered harbors of the north shore, the clear waters of the Long Island Sound, the bays and inlets of the south shore, or even the Atlantic ocean itself.

The East End of Long Island also offers excellent freshwater fishing for a surprising number of species including largemouth bass, chain pickerel, walleye, smallmouth bass, brown trout, and many different species of panfish. In fact, the eastern region of Long Island has some of the best fisheries in the state for largemouth bass and chain pickerel. Many years, there is no freeze making for year round freshwater fishing opportunities. Many of these ponds have completely undeveloped shorelines giving the angler wilderness feeling in an urban setting.

One of the best attributes of Long Island is that it can be used as a base of operations for fishing other areas. Long Island is within a day trip from anyplace in Connecticut or New Jersey. The Catskills and the Hudson Valley are also within a short drive as well. A brief vacation also puts the kayak angler into some of the best waters in New England or western New York.

The goal of this blog is to explore the local fisheries of Long Island and many of the fishing opportunities in some of the more well known fisheries within driving range of the Island in upstate New York or sister states along the northeast. The blog can also be used as a reference for planning family friendly kayak fishing trips in some northeast locations. In short, expect the unexpected as this blog will discuss fishing strategy for many different species in as many locations in the northeast as possible.

  1. Hey Pat:

I'm a huge fan of the blog, and a recent new owner of a Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 12.

I was wondering what sonar unit you would recommend for kayak angling. I had been looking at the lowrance elite 4x HDI, but I've heard that the install is a bit tricky for that particular unit and that the benefits of down scan imaging for kayak anglers is somewhat questionable.

If you could give me any insight, I would greatly appreciate it! Most importantly though, thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge on kayak angling, it's helped my fishing immensely.

    Best,
    Mike (m.scheiner10@gmail.com)

  2. Mike - sorry for the very late reply! I haven't been too active on the blog lately! Been busy at work or busy fishing! In terms of a sonar unit, I use a Hummingbird color sonar / GPS combo - good electronics can increase your fishing success twofold especially if it is a quality unit and you know how to use it. I will email you the model number, but definitely go for quality on your sonar unit but remember it will take major maintenance in saltwater.

  3. Was curious if anyone new of a good place to buy a used fishing kayak. I bought and restored one a few years ago but had to sell it. Let me know. Thanks and keep up the good work!
